17th January 2015 - The year so far!

Hello Blog, it's been a while! Ok, so not that long for anyone reading this but it's been nearly 3 weeks for me!

I have to be honest, writing this became a bit of a chore last year. There's only so much for me to talk about when you don't actually do anything. I'm sure it got quite boring for people reading it as well! Sorry about that!

So I thought I'd do a weekly round-up maybe, as I can't quit cold turkey! Except I have had no motivation to even write that!

So I figured I would write whenever the mood takes me and go from there! I'm sure you won't miss me too much!

So, what have I been up to? The honest truth - not a lot! Lots of cleaning, tidying and gymming! We are actually back at the gym and have gone every weekday morning (except Wednesday, of course) for the past two weeks! We also haven't been drinking since the 2nd Jan and so combined, we're feeling good! Except the usual aching from the gym, but that's good pain, allegedly, so can't complain!

My last mouthful of wine until at least Feb 14th! We may decide to stay off the booze longer but at the minute, 6 weeks is a good time for us! Plus I REALLY need to hoover the carpet!

The biggest thing for me, so far this year is that I have been able to smell and taste things a little! I know that sounds really weird but I normally have no sense of smell at all. Which therefore limits my sense of taste somewhat. I discovered this with what a lot of people would consider the best smell in the world. Cooked bacon.

I was only having cereal but I asked Paul to cook a rasher for me to see if I could taste it as well as smell it and I could!

This has continued from the 3rd or so to date! Two weeks of being able to smell stuff! It's a bit overwhelming! The downside of this is that I have REALLY bad sinus pain. I haven't had face ache like this since I had the operation on my nose nearly 4 years ago. Oh, and there are the nosebleeds. Epic nosebleeds. So you know what? It's not worth it. If they continue I guess I'll be going back to see Treebeard (the Ear Nose Throat specialist...see what I did there?) and see what he says. If they want me to have another operation, I will have to think about it. I don't think I want to go through all that again. Plus we watched a new episode of Big Bang Theory last night (my new go-to tv show as I haven't really watched it before) where Leonard has to have his deviated septum fixed. That's kinda what I need doing. Seeing his post-op look (even though fake) reminded me of how horrible it was, so I don't want to go through that again.

This is me in May 2011 with bandage and without the bandage, which shows the swelling on my face.

Yep - unattractive. Horrible. So I don't want to go through that again unless there was over 80% possibility that I would get my sense of smell back for good.

I am also wearing the same jumper as I type. I need new clothes. :)

Anyway, back to life.

We started looking for new healthy foods this month to try to save a bit of money and eat better. We (when I say 'we', I mean Paul) has been making 'Overnight Oats' every morning for the past couple of weeks for breakfast and they're...interesting!

They don't taste wonderful. They don't taste of much at all to be fair (that's not just my opinion, Paul agrees too) even with fruit in them but they keep both of us full until lunch time! No desire at all to snack on anything! So it's worth eating something blah!

They're oats in almond milk and fat free vanilla yogurt with chia seeds and a bit of cinnamon. Then leave overnight. Before eating, add whatever fruit you like (blueberries are my choice) and devour!

My Secret Santa gift arrived. I had an IOU on Boxing Day and sure enough, it came through the post!

A collection of kitty poetry! Lovely!

On the back of the gift tag...

£60 of free wine! When we're not drinking! Plus we're not new customers. Boo. I might give it to T if she manages to not drink all of January! There's an incentive!

So life ticks on in the Kirkham household. Seriously, nothing new to see here! The cats are fine as ever. Barney's very naughty at the minute, mostly in the early hours of the morning. Probably because he's hungry, but nowt we can do about that, pal. You're still on a diet!

They've both taken to the shelves for the first time in a long time. Probably because I've tidied them so there's space! Maia likes the shelf next to me on the sofa...

It's a good spot to get a cuddle or two from me, plus she can see what I'm eating and try to steal some!

Barney made space for himself on the other set of shelves, on one much higher up. I was a little afraid of the shelf buckling under him but it's fine. He knew he was being naughty but there he stayed for a little while. Naughty sausage.

Still, when he cuddles your hand while he sleeps, you can't stay too mad!

Yesterday I took a delivery of January's Cat Hampurr! I was quite excited about this! The kitties were equally excited!

Inside were a couple of different types of dried food (we will use a little treats so as not to overly dilute the light food they're on at the minute), some Thrive dried meat treats which they LOVE (but apparently stink!), a thick bag on catnip and a catnip toy. Which Maia couple wait to get her paws on!

I tried to get a pic of everything in the box. The cats would NOT let me. The lure of the nip is just too strong!

This is Freddie the Fish, from Beco Pets. It's made from recycled plastics and fully recyclable. Plus it's stuffed full of apparently excellent catnip. It made Maia drool so much, I had to put it to dry after about 10 minutes!

Barney approved of the nip.

I had to put the nip and the rest of the treats away, but of course, I couldn't deny them the box. Which was left unattended. The gorgeous purple tissue paper also became a toy in itself, however. Must have been in close proximity to the catnip!

Roly Poly Barney belly! There's shreds of purple all over the downstairs floor this morning. I think they've been trying to make catnip scented ticker-tape!

I get these boxes every other month. I am tempted to get them every month but I can't justify the expense at the minute. We'd also end up with a lot of food that may not be conducive to the cats losing weight! The up side of what we get in these boxes is that it's good quality food, rather than the cheap crap that they used to eat. So I know I'm not feeding them bad things, but the vet says diet so diet we must. They both seem to have more energy since being on their diet, which could be a combination of better food and also losing a few ozs. Long may it last! Playful Barney is a fairly regular occurrence, but playful Maia is a joy to behold! She's 9 next month, which I know isn't really old, but it doesn't happen very often so I need to make the most of it whenever I get chance!

So that's all really for me so far this year. Rather miserable, I know. We don't really have any other plans for the rest of the month either! Just cleaning, tidying etc. I am determined to be more house proud this year and actually complete some projects in the house I have wanted to do since I bought it. Which is nearly 7 years ago. Houses are expensive!

So I guess I'll see you soon! Maybe!

31st December 2014 - NYE

It's the last day of 2014! Crikey! Where did that year go?! Feels like only yesterday we were celebrating the arrival of little Ted, or my birthday in York, or our holiday or wedding anniversary! Cripes, how time flies!

What better way to spend the last day of the year than at work! Just like pretty much every other day this year!

Once again, there were a few issues with the car when Paul went to drop me off...

Trying to capture the gorgeous feathery shapes in the ice. Can't really see it as well as I could in real life. They sure were pretty!

I got to work earlier than I had the rest of the week and still was bored. I have loads of work, don't get me wrong, but without the constant unpredictability of the phone ringing, loads of post to deal with or people to talk to, it gets very monotonous very quickly!

Today's calendar. Such a gorgeous little thing. I think the office should get a kitten! I would keep me entertained on days like this. Granted, my productivity would take a severe dive, but I'd be very loyal!

The closest I'll get to an office kitten is the local wildlife!

This is my friend the squirrel! He comes to visit fairly frequently! If I ever write a children's story, he will be one of the stars as he has a few other little friends who keep him company and the characters write themselves. I'm not going to say who they are though, so no-one can steal my story!

Once again, I was in work until about 1:30pm when BigBoss T let me go home. Paul picked me up and we headed home. I felt the need to be decidedly lazy for the rest of the afternoon. Why not spend the last day of the year the same as the rest of it?! :)

Barney agreed.

As part of our laziness, we decided to order some pizza, which is also a tribute to an early date we had on this day 7 years ago. Dominos finest whilst supping fizz? Don't mind if I do!

Check out all that unhealthy and fatty goodness! Mmmm!

We ate most of it, saving some for later when we might need it.

We decided to go out for a couple of drinks at a local pub for a while. If it took us to midnight, great, but if not, at least we got out of the house!

We got there at about 8:30pm or so and it wasn't as busy as we thought it would be.

A nice glass of red in front of an open fire was enjoyed. Perfect.

We stayed for a couple of hours but it wasn't the most excitable of crowds and we were a bit bored. So we headed home where we were able to have a few more drinks and see in the new year with a bit of Jools Holland!

At midnight the neighbours went wild and cheered in the New Year by going crazy and making a LOT of noise. There were also a few fireworks which was nice.

I think I managed to make it to about 1am before falling asleep.

2014 - you were interesting! Lots of wonderful things happened but some sad ones too.

I wonder what 2015 has to offer!

2013 and 2013

30th December 2014 - Treats!

Another morning to wake up and go to work. I am less than enthused about this plan, I have to be honest.

Work was so quiet. REALLY dull. 1 phone call all day and that was at 9am on the nose. I sat, listened to music, did loads of little jobs that needed to be done and generally kept myself occupied, wishing I was at home.

I think today's calendar entry is talking about Barney, just as yesterday's was!

I also realised that I'm a big ninny and forgot to bring any food for myself to enjoy at lunch time. I had to tide myself over somehow and there was only one edible thing available to me.

I snacked on custard creams. I LOVE CUSTARD CREAMS. I only had 4, which I consider an achievement.

BigBoss T was hanging around again, much like yesterday, and once again was stunned that we were open considering how quiet it is. So today he let me go at 1!

Paul picked me up and I vegetated a little. He was working downstairs so I occupied myself with my book upstairs. I also decided to have a bath, which was rather nice.

We then did our usual tv, dinner, bed combo, which works so well for us. We were naughty and did have a cheeky glass of wine as well. Well, it's Christmas after all! Sort of...

Just discovered that this is my 900th post! Wow. That's a lot of me talking about eating dinner, watching tv and going to bed! Can't believe there are 900 of these!

29th December 2014 - Nothing new!

The alarm went off at 6:30am and I snoozed til ten past. Because it's Monday and I have to work today!

I wasn't best pleased but I had offered to, so T could have a decent break so I couldn't grumble too much. I knew it would be quiet so wouldn't be too bad.

Except, for some reason, I started running late, so when Paul offered to give me a lift to the office, we were greeted with a frozen up car.

So we had to defrost the car. Didn't take too long, thank goodness!

BigBoss T was in and was really perplexed as to why we were open. We had 2 calls all day and neither of them were important. Madness. So he let me go at 3pm!

Still, we were open and I proceeded as ever with my day.

I noticed that I hadn't played with my daily calendar yet, and was amused by the Boxing Day offering!

No idea why it's sideways. They have also never seen Barney running around and jumping. Graceful is not the word I would use!

I asked Paul to come and get me and then headed home to do a few chores and relax a little. It needed to be done after a day of boredom at the office.

Can't really remember what we did for the rest of the evening to be honest. Can't have been the most enthralling of pass times!

Sunday, 4 January 2015

28th December 2014 - About Time.

We had another lazy morning. It's Sunday...I's so easy to lose track of days over we felt we deserved it!

Paul had football to watch, and me...well...I didn't really have anything. So I decided that the best thing for today would be...

Lord of the Rings Marathon! WHOOP! It's been so long since we've done one of those!

Paul watched football downstairs and I watched Lord of the Rings upstairs! I was a happy camper!

Barney spent most of the day being cute and curled up on the heated throw!

Maia spent most of the morning on the window, over the radiator, warming her belly! I don't know why but I thought this pic would look better in black and white! Probably because it hides the hideous state that the blinds and window are in. We have two cats. We can't have nice things.

Fellowship seemed to be over very quickly so I moved on to Two Towers. I have seen this movie more than any other in the world, ever. No lie. I could probably quote it in my sleep!

Barney's belly was a little distraction. The fact that he has rolled onto his back indicates that Paul came to join us in watching Two Towers!

We also needed to roll with tradition in another sense...

There had to be fizz. A - because it's Sunday, B - because we're having a LotR marathon, and C - it's Christmas. Kinda.

Work schmirk tomorrow!

We watched tv and ate pasta bake for dinner as Paul didn't feel like cooking - he's still pretty poorly.

He ended up going to bed at the end of Two Towers. I carried on watching Return of the King, but stopped when I had to change the disc to go to bed myself. It was getting late. I failed in the mission of watching it all in one day but then again, we did start quite late. Imagine when I have all 3 extended Hobbit movies to watch as well! That's going to be one weekend bonanza! :) I can't wait! :)

27th December 2014 - Meow

Not a bad sleep, which is good! Barney woke me up just before 6 by 'singing' at the other end of the corridor, outside Paul's parents' room. They got up not much after as the heating had gone off so they needed to go into the loft to fix it. The ladder is loud. Paul's Dad is loud. Don't think they're used to other people being in the house. Oh well.

Paul got up and I lazed in bed for as long as I could justify then started packing up some of our things as we intended to come home today.

Maia was judging me. She doesn't want to leave. She loves it here.

Barney in his usual position on top of the wardrobes!

We managed to get out the house by 11am, which seems quite early but it is good! We never seem to get out early!

Maia really wasn't happy about it at all.

This is her being quiet, would you believe?! She was very vocal the whole way home. Barney joined in for a while, tag-team meowing. It makes me feel so guilty!

When we got in, the house was cold. I called my Mum as they had discovered a leak when they got in last night, probably due to the snow, and then we made a decision to vegetate for the rest of the day.

We also opened one of my Christmas presents from our investigators at work.

Lots of yummy goodness in here!

We rested and relaxed. We generally didn't really do a lot at all today!

We decided that as Paul still isn't feeling 100% that we would get a takeaway curry and watch TV. We would have gone out but the thought of going out wasn't overly appealing!

Our starter. Tandoori goodness!

We ate quite a lot, to say it arrived half an hour earlier than we had wanted it to! We watched tv, catching up on some of our shows, then headed to bed as we were both shattered. So back to normality then!

26th December 2014 - Boxing Day (AKA Tedmas 2)

I had a lousy night's sleep. Tradition states this. I always seem to be ill at Michael and Annabel's house!

I got up in the night to cough and it was so bad I made myself sick. TMI? Maybe. I went downstairs as I didn't want to disturb the baby. I heard him a couple of times but he didn't cry - more just made noise! It's cute, as a guest. I'm sure that's not the case as the parent when you're getting a good sleep!

I then had to get up and find a glass to get some water for Paul as he was starting to feel a bit poorly. Whether it's the wine or my cold, who knows. I furnished him with water and got a little more sleep.

I told Annabel last night that Paul normally wakes up early and goes downstairs to watch tv. Well, it was me today. I was up early and chilling in the living room when Annabel came down with my well rested little pal!

So we gave him one of his new toys (this egg thing with chicks in love it apparently!) and let him play!

As with yesterday, the front facing camera was ever present, and this morning he was just as smiley at himself as he had been yesterday!

We were happily playing, and I tried to take a picture of how happily he was playing when he looked up at me like this...

I mean...just...AW!

Elvis also got a little bit of action as well!

Elvis has a mirror on his side, so that got lots of smiles, which is good!

Yeah, there are a million Ted pictures, but I can't resist sharing them!

The many selfie faces of Ted J Hartley!

Nummy Eggy toy!

Obligatory Ted playing video!

Bellatrix was also keeping us company this morning...loving the nip, as ever. She positively destroyed the neatly contained scratching post to get to the leftover nip! She's a nip fiend!

She's just so cute!

Paul has caught my lurgy, which is naturally the end of the world. He stayed in bed as long as possible and had some medicine with breakfast.  He had a lot of driving to do, so I had to go along with what he wanted.

We got on our way at around 11, with a quick stop at the shops to get a few bits and bobs before starting up the M6. There was a fair bit of traffic on the motorway, so we stopped so Paul could have a coffee to perk himself up a little.

We then carried on to my Aunt's house near Preston for the Hartley family party, made extra special because it's the first time that they got to meet Ted! Very special!

Any excuse for a Ted selfie, complete with Christmas cracker hat and reindeer jumper!

Everyone was understandably smitten with our new family member and he was all smiles for them, not at all scared, which is really nice!

Here is with some presents from his Great Uncle and Auntie. Lolz. They won't like me saying that! He seemed to like them very much and was talking to them, which is uber cute!

Scary Auntie Whiney doesn't get smiles when in pictures!

Just to prove there were other people at the family party, not just Ted, here's a view of the room!

The adorable Emile and Jacob as fun as ever!

We all got our Secret Santa presents...when I say all, me and my Aunt had an IOU as Santa forgot our gifts! Oh well, means Christmas lasts a bit longer!

So my gift can be more pictures of Ted!

Grandma Hartley and Ted having a few giggles!

...and more giggles. Grandma Hartley certainly likes playtime with Ted!

We did give other people a go. He wanted to play with my cousin Karen as well!

By play with Karen, it probably meant pull her hair! He's not too violent with it though, and is so very cute!

Mum soon got him back though, and posed him for a cuddle with my cousin Adam!

They didn't stay much longer as it's a two hour drive back for them. Ted was getting tired so would hopefully sleep in the car.

One last Ted selfie?

Complete with photobomb from Granddad Hartley in the background!

Going to miss his little face now! Christmas is definitely much better with little ones around!

We didn't stay much longer either as we needed to head over to Blackpool for the Kirkham family party!

There were cocktails and lots of play time with the adorable twins S and O, plus lots of girly talk with my little flowergirl S, who is turning into a little lady and is very beautiful!

I got turned into aliens, dogs, chickens etc far more times than I can count but it's all good. I also got to play with the giant Asali, who featured in last year's post which you can see below. Last year I took a photo of her giant puppy paw. 1 year later and it's a little bigger!

2013 on the left. 2014 on the right. She's deffo growing!

Paul wasn't feeling particularly amazing or social so we only stayed for a couple of hours. We had heard rumours of snow falling, especially in the Midlands and we didn't want to get caught in it if it spread up north.

There was a bit of sleet, but not too bad. Paul came in and made himself a hot toddy, getting changed into something a little more comfortable.

See those Avengers 'lounge pants'? Yep - they're from me! You're welcome, Paul!

Avengers, coincidentally, was on the tv! Despite having watched it at least a million times already, we watched it again!

Maia was very happy to see us. Mostly because it meant that she got fed!

Barney and I had a little bit of play time. It was then that I realised that he wasn't all 'butter won't melt' as he had been a naughty boy. Again.

He loves white wires and had set to on Paul's Mum's phone charger. He has done this before with her camera wire during our wedding. He's so naughty. I gave her my phone wire which is identical as an apology. He's so bad.

We watched the movie and then it was time for Match of the Day so I headed to bed. Hopefully to get more sleep than the last couple of nights!
